When your guide’s name is actually Savanna, you just KNOW you’re going to get a great tour of the Honolulu Zoo. And we did, along with our friend, Suzanne. Not only does the zoo specialize in animals that thrive in tropical environments, but it is the only zoo in the US that owes its existence to a sovereign monarch. King Kalākaua originally donated the land that was opened as Queen Kapi’olani Park in 1877 in honor of his wife. King Kalākaua used the park for his personal collection of exotic creatures, leading to the opening of the Honolulu Zoo in 1916.
